The LM5C is a linear five port desktop smoking machine for the sequential smoking of all kinds of cigars and cigarillos. The machine fulfills all requirements of CRM 64 (CORESTA Recommended Method).

The cigar smoking module consist of five sample holders, air flow directors, an ashtrays and the approved butt length detection system, all enclosed in a CRM 64 conform and transparent exhaust hood. All types of product diameters are supported. Beside the standard filter pad holders (CFP) optionally all kind of alternative trapping systems like liquid traps and electrostatic traps can be connected to the machine. Gas phase collection is done using gas collection bags.

 


The CO/CO2 analyzer can be integrated into the RM200A2, RM400A2, LX20 and RM20H2. The module is controlled by the control unit of the smoking machine. The results are shown in mg/cigarette.

It works according to the NDIR method (non dispersive infrared absorption) in accordance with ISO 8454. During a smoke run on the smoking machine, the gas phase is collected. After smoking is completed, it is automatically transferred to the CO/CO2 analyzer for analysis.

An identically constructed standalone CO/CO² C24-2 analyzer for all other smoking machines is also available.

 


The 1 port linear smoking machine LM1 is designed to smoke conventional cigarettes under ISO and intense conditions but also by user defined settings. The machine fulfills all requirements of ISO 3308 and ISO 20778. It is airflow controlled and allows the usage of all common trapping systems like glass fibre filters, Impingers and electrostatic precipitation traps as well as gas collection systems. The LM1 consists of the high performance piston pump PM1 and the smoking unit. The PM1 is the center piece of the smoking machine with the installed software, which is used to register samples, to run the analysis, to display results and an integrated Ethernet interface which serves to transmit the measured values to an external PC. It is controlled via touchscreen interface and can be connected easily to other units of our modular smoking machine series.

The LM1's small design delivers all the features and capabilities of its larger congeners, but its modular design is what enables it to be operated as s single stand-alone smoking machine. The LM1 is the perfect tool for method development and research tasks.


The 4 port linear smoking machine LM4 is designed to smoke conventional cigarettes under ISO and intense conditions but also by the parameter setting of the user. The machine fulfills all requirements of ISO 3308 and ISO 20778. It is airflow controlled and allows the usage of all common trapping systems like glass fiber filters, Impingers and electrostatic precipitation traps as well as gas collection systems. The LM4 consists of the high performance piston pump PM1 and the smoking unit. The LM5S sidestream smoke machine is a member of our modular family of instruments specifically designed to bring the latest technologies to the production and laboratory environment while maintaining the smallest possible footprint and supporting the widest range of products.

The LM5S collects the side stream smoke following the procedures given in ISO 20773 und ISO 20774. The LM5S offers a highly flexible platform for standard side stream smoke analysis as well as for research smoking.

Combinations of mainstream, side stream with or without Impingers, Dewar’s flaks options for cryogenic work, both in single and double arrangements are possible with the LM5S. It is also suitable to determine Hoffmann analyses in side stream smoke.

The LM5S smokes in a sequential manner, meaning that the cigarettes can be lit with the fishtail chimney in situ, thus not affecting the smoking results.

Special infrared sensors are used for butt length detection (endpoint detection) and trigger the machine (steering element) to stop puffing and automatically raise the chimney on an individual basis.


The twenty-port LX20 is a member of Borgwaldt KC's family of linear smoking machines. With the unmatched level of flexibility the LX20 provides capabilities previously not possible in a single smoke run. Up to 20 different regimes can be smoked simultaneously and these can be randomized across the 20 ports.

The LX20 can of course provide using the same smoking regimen on all 20 ports at the same time or simultaneously smoking of 5 ports each of ISO 3308, ISO 207878, Canadian Intense, Massachusetts and Bidi regimens. But the flexibility does not end there, with individual ports the groups of 4 ports smoking a specific regime do not have to be grouped into consecutive ports, but can be randomly spread across the whole 20 ports, so providing true randomized smoking as described in the smoking standards.

 

The way of user setup, operation, flexibility and maintenance make the LX20 a very user friendly linear smoke engine, addressing many of the time consuming tasks normally associated with linear smoking with simplified or automated setup operations.

Beside the standard glass fiber filter pad holders (CFP) optionally all kind of alternative trapping systems like liquid traps and electrostatic traps can be connected to the machine. Gas collection is done using gas collection bags. Integrated gas analyzers offer a fast and precise gas measurement.

The LX20 is also available for e-cigarettes and HTP.


Integrated NO / NOx analyzer available for rotary smoke machines.  

Several of the nitrogen oxide compounds are toxic components of cigarette smoke. In this respect, it has been an essential element in the determination of smoke analysis. Although the analysis was initially an element of product development, it is now increasingly being integrated into routine analysis.

Borgwaldt KC has developed a NO/NOx analysis system in cooperation with a leading analyzer manufacturer and several partner laboratories.

The analysis system works without additional fume treatments such as diluents or dosing units. It provides the ability to determine the amount of NO and NOx in the mainstream smoke for each individual puff, cigarette or complete smoke. The results are displayed in mg per puff, cigarette or puff.

As a logical extension of the product portfolio, the RM20M, RM20H2, RM200A2 and RM400A2 rotary smoke machines are initially available with this option. The RM20H2, RM200A2 and RM400A2 are equipped with an integrated module, while the RM20M tabletop model has an external solution.


The semi-automatic 20 port smoking machine RM20H2 unites flexible trapping arrangements with minimized dead volumes using a standard rotary smoking system to support the range of mainstream trapping systems needed for determination of special compounds (Hoffmann analytes) in the cigarette smoke.

The rotary smoking principle provides the most efficient platform for the collection of mainstream smoke particulates, gas phase and subsequent analysis. The smoking machine RM20H2 meets the requirements of ISO 3308 and ISO 20778. It is not only suitable for routine smoking according to ISO 4387 and ISO 20779 but it also allows for smoking of FCSA’s according to ISO 15592-3. In addition to the ISO smoke regimens the conditions of the Massachusetts and Health Canada methods are considered also.

By accommodating various trapping systems such as impingers, glass fiber filters and electrostatic precipitation traps the RM20H2 is a versatile instrument ideal for research & development as well as for special applications.

Besides this routine smoking behaviour a puff-by-puff smoking can be performed as well. The machine provides sufficient space for different impinger configurations.


The RM20M is a desk top manual 20 port rotary smoking machine. Sample loading and butt extraction is done manually as well as connecting the chosen trapping system and gas collection bag. The end point termination will be done automatically controlled. Beside the standard Cambridge filter pad holder (CFP) optionally all kind of alternative trapping systems like liquid traps and electrostatic traps can be connected to the machine.

The RM20M smoking machine fulfills the requirements of ISO 3308 and ISO 20778. It can be used for routine applications as well as for intense smoke passages. Fine-cut smoke articles (FCSA) according to ISO 15592-3 can also be smoked. In addition to the ISO smoking regimes, the terms of the Massachusetts and Health Canada method are taken into account.


The smoking machine RM200A2 is a fully automatic 20 port rotary smoking machine. It is designed to support routine smoking for determination of nicotine, tar and CO and optional NOx. The rotary smoking principle provides the most efficient platform for the collection of mainstream particulates of cigarettes as well as the belonging gas phases.

The smoking machine RM200A2 meets the requirements of ISO 3308 and ISO 20778. It is not only suitable for routine smoking according to ISO 4387 and ISO 20779, it also allows smoking of Fine Cut Smoking Articles (FCSA) according to ISO 15592-3. In addition to the ISO smoking regimens, the conditions of the Massachusetts and Canada Intense methods are also met and preinstalled.

The automatic handling of filter traps and cigarette cassettes as well as the integrated scale and the fully automated performance of the smoke runs from cigarette loading to butt extraction enables the machine to perform 10 consecutive smoke runs without any operator interference. Optionally all kind of alternative trapping systems like liquid traps and electrostatic traps can be connected to the machine as well.


The smoking machine RM400A2 is a fully automatic 20 port rotary smoking machine. It is designed to support routine smoking for determination of nicotine, tar and CO and optional NOx. The rotary smoking principle provides the most efficient platform for the collection of mainstream particulates of cigarettes as well as the belonging gas phases.


The smoking machine RM400A2 meets the requirements of ISO 3308 and ISO 20778. It is not only suitable for routine smoking according to ISO 4387 and ISO 20779; it also allows smoking of Fine Cut Smoking Articles (FCSA’s) according to ISO 15592-3. In addition to the ISO smoking regimens, the conditions of the Massachusetts and Canada Intense methods are also met and preinstalled.

The Shisha smoker is a linear one-port table top smoking machine. It is designed to standardize smoking of water pipe tobacco in order to obtain reproducible results. Several different parameters and regimes can be set to guide or vary the machine smoking process. In addition a standardized laboratory water pipe is available.
